Who are you? Could you tell me about yourself?
My name is Crystal Woo and I am a 4th-year civil engineering student at The Cooper Union. Born and raised in New York.
When are you graduating?
May 2023
What is your major? And why did you choose your major?
Growing up in New York City and seeing the Manhattan skyline brought up my interest in civil engineering. Seeing how countless projects have positively impacted New Yorkers has inspired me to return the favor.
Who is someone you look up to in your field? Either today or historically?
Emily Roebling is best known for her contributions in completing the Brooklyn Bridge. She paved the way for a future generation of women to pursue STEM. Her story has inspired me to pursue higher education in structural engineering and take the initiative to learn more about bridges.
Why did you choose Cooper Union?
Cooper Union has been a great experience for me in these past four years. I chose Cooper Union because of the student-teacher connections. Attending a school with professors who have unbounded enthusiasm towards their respective disciplines has reinforced my passion for becoming an engineer.
What is one thing that you learned at Cooper that you didn’t expect?
I’ve learned social skills — like becoming a leader and working with others. The stereotype of an engineer working in isolation and crunching numbers is not entirely true! All disciplines must work together in order to create a great project.
What inspires you?
My family and the sacrifices they’ve made to help me get to where I am today.
What are you reading, listening to, or watching?
I am currently rewatching my comfort show, Modern Family.
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
I hope to manage large-scale bridge projects!
What are you passionate about? And what do you do in your free time to refresh yourself?
I am passionate about teaching mahjong to anyone who is willing to learn. Mahjong is a fun tile-game, but also a platform for players to socialize and relax.
